As some of you might know, I love to dance but other than Zumba, I haven't done much dancing in awhile. I dance in my living room from time to time and technically I dance every week but I haven't gone out and danced three hours straight in a......loooooooong.....time. Since like June? Yikes. I don't think I was even wearing my dance shoes that night either. :tears: I am on my way to correcting this today. I am skipping kickboxing (blasphemy . . . I know) and going to one of my favorite dance studios that I once called my second home. Cache Dance Studios is home to the two salsa instructors that taught me to properly 1,2,3 . . . 5,6,7. Located in the Bronx, Juan and Caridad Portella have built a warm and welcoming place for salsa dancers of all levels. They are great instructors but what I like most about them is that they teach dance etiquette. They don't have a culture of snobby dancers that will only dance with people who can execute three spins and have fancy foot work. Instead, they encourage their advanced dancers to dance with the rest of us.
Because I am not consistent with my dance training, I'd call myself an intermediate dancer. I do it, because I love it. Perhaps my arms aren't perfect or my feet positioning isn't always right BUT I am not on Dancing with the Stars and Juan is no Maksim Chmerkovskiy. He's definitely not a mean or combative instructor. Polar opposites. Which is what I love. (I also love Maksim but for other reason . . .sigh)
Cache teaches their dancers how to:
- take care of your partner while not knocking the other couple dancing next to you
- look good without being showy.
- have fun!
Dance can be very intimidating to some people and learning to loosen up can be the most valuable lesson you'll learn when taking a dance class.
Juan and Caridad have a new studio that I haven't had the opportunity to check out because of my kickboxing and Zumba schedule. I can't wait to see it and update everyone about it tomorrow. I'm also going to wear my heart rate monitor to count the amount of calories I burn in each class. Dance classes are said to be a great way to burn calories. I'll post the outcome tomorrow.
Lastly, here is a video of my boyfriend and I dancing salsa.
