Hello everyone!!! I have finally decided that I need to take on the TD Five Borough Bike Tour Challenge. And of course, I'm late. Registration is SOLD OUT! Oh typically Puerto Rican me!
But I am not letting that hold me back. Apparently, you can ride the race if you choose an organization to help raise funds for. So, after lots of consideration and two hours reading each partner charity's page, I chose one and I am super excited about it.
I decided to raise money for First Descents. They provide young adult cancer fighters and survivors a free outdoor adventure experience designed to empower them to climb, paddle and surf beyond their diagnosis, defy their cancer, reclaim their lives and connect with others doing the same. Any young adult with cancer is eligible regardless of physical challenges, diagnosis or prognosis!
Now, I know what fitness has done for so many people . . . my students, my friends, and myself. Fitness can truly help build one's self-esteem. Imagine what it can do for someone who's battling cancer? What truly moved me was the survivor feedback. Here are some excerpts:
Being blind [from cancer] has created a huge void in my life. That’s why First Descents is so awesome. Just to be given that opportunity to get back into sports, it was surreal. I was finally an athlete again. -Tailz
My life post cancer has been mostly lows, very depressing, not believing in myself. FD taught me a valuable lesson…….life is like a Wave Train. There is both ups and downs, but if you believe in yourself and hop on, you will have the ride of your life!! Thank you FD! I woov choo! - Paisley, 2012
Kayaking and cancer brought us together, but the living we experienced formed life long bonds. -X2C
I'd love for you to join me by either joining the group and riding beside me OR by donating! Here's how you can donate: Visit my fundraising page and click on the donate now button. It's that easy!
