Tips to kick-start healthy eating habits

Here are some tips, I provide my challengers when they begin a challenge. Whether you are in my challenge group or just challenged yourself to change your eating habits, I'm sure you'll find these tips helpful. A lot of them are from the various Team Beachbody nutrition guides. I've just consolidated them.

  1. Focus on a few favorite foods.
  2. Read labels when food shopping. (Download the Fooducate app on your phone and scan products.)
  3. Shop the perimeter of the supermarket. This is where you'll find actual foods. Everything else, in a can or in a bag has been processed somehow.
  4. Cook at home. It's the easiest way to ensure eating clean. And it tremendously benefits your bank account.
  5. Eat 5-6 meals a day. Meals should consist of whole natural foods. Foods that aren’t packaged, processed, or preserved.
  6. Each meal should be balanced with lean protein, complex carbs, vegetables and essential fats.
  7. Drink water! Lots of it. Water is the best choice. Cut out the soda, juice, etc.
  8. Focus on nutrients, not calories, not low fat, fat-free, etc. Many times fat free and low fat foods are so highly processed and high in sugar or salt. I rather eat full fat then low-fat.
  9. Avoid fried, processed, refined, high in saturated fats and high in sugar content foods.
  10. Portion control is key. Stay conscious of it. You can overeat healthy foods as well.
  11. Buy organic when possible but only when its necessary.  Sometimes organic is overpriced and you could have gone without it.
  12. Do not go more than 3 hours without eating. If its three hours later and you are not hungry than your previous meal probably too large.
  13. You can eat before bed! Just keep it high in protein and low in carbs – Greek yogurt is a great choice.
