Why I decided to get my Personal Training Certification

The real title should be, "Why I decided to get my Personal Training Certification But Not Actually Train at a Gym." So, I think its like 5 years now, I decided that I needed to get my personal training license. I had been teaching Zumba Fitness for a year and I felt like I needed to learn more about the body AND legitimize myself as an instructor. I didn't want to get my Group Fitness Certification because I thought, "hey maybe this could turn into a career." So I went about trying to figure out how I was going to get my license. I asked a bunch of people who were trainers and they gave me the long list of acronyms and at the end of day I settled on the American Council on Exercise Personal Training Certification.



They mailed me this huge study book and I studied all summer long. When I realized I still wasn't prepared, I decided to take a study course with Exercise, Etc.  They helped me feel more at ease and a day after taking the course, I took my test. And I passed.

Then I was all, I need a job! Well, I learned two things while I interviewed for a job. 1. Most gyms don't care if you know what you are talking about.

2. They want you to be a sales person.

3. You do not get paid unless you have a client but you have to schedule yourself for 8 hours and walk around and try to convert people to customers. (I used to run from those trainers at the gym.)

4. They give newbies wack hours.

And well, to be honest, I didn't have the time for that.

Don't get me wrong, this was a passion of mine but I wasn't going to starve for it. So I started training people privately and that was fun, more lucrative and pretty rewarding. BUT and this a big BUT, OMG it got crazy time consuming and I was going cuckoo! I decided to take a step back and put all that on hold. At the end of the day, fitness was my passion because it ENERGIZED me, not drained me. So I went back to having a desk job and teaching classes and blogging. I found a great way to share my knowledge via a blog. You guys aren't demanding! You don't need 8 hours plus of my day. You just love me when I blog and don't really think about me when I don't. Lol.



Well, now I have found a new way to share my knowledge and help people get fit without driving miles and miles to someone's home. I'm an online fitness coach and that is 100% more rewarding to me than in-person training sessions. I get to help people with more than just exercise, I get to show people how I changed my eating habits, and even how I saved money by eating healthier.  It's super rewarding and I get to work with people from all over the country, not just those living near me. If you are considering a career in fitness, ask me about it. Seriously, I talk to people about it all the time. For free. I love sharing what I have learned, how I do it, and why I do what I do. Don't get me wrong, I still teach small group fitness classes and I still love it but I have found a way to feel less stressed and make better use of my time while following my passion.
