The Day I DANCED with TANYA BEARDSLEY

This is so crazy. Over 800 blog posts between funfitchic.com, funfitchic.net and the zumba with melissa blog I had way back when, my MOST POPULAR BLOG POST is STILL the one I wrote from the Zumba Convention back in 2011. 

I can't believe I have been on my dance fitness game for this long! And everyday I learn something new. Everyday I feel like a new instructor. In my opinion, its best to keep learning because your craft ONLY gets better. 

Crazy how so much has changed yet stayed the same. I didn't edit the article at all and when you read it, I even mention how "hip hop is not my favorite!" OMG and now I teach CIZE which is based on hip-hop dance fitness. Five years later... huh

The last day is always bitter sweet. After such a jam-packed weekend filled with surprises and great experiences, you just don’t want to go home, yet your body is begging you to rest. Most people end up skipping the last day because of pain, exhaustion, etc.

I, of course, chose not to.

We woke up very early AGAIN to jump online for our first workshop: Warm ups and Cool Downs with Tanya Beardsley. If anyone knows anything about Zumba, they would know that Tanya is a superstar in the Zumba world and rightfully so.

She is so knowledgeable, funny, charismatic, friendly and the girl can dance. The Zumba Corporation is lucky to have her. FOR SURE!

Although I live in New York, I have never made it to a Tanya B. certification. She is the Zumba Education Specialist for New York but her classes fill up quickly.  I’ve taken some Master Classes with her before but the opportunity to be in the front row at a workshop with her was something I was looking forward to. We waited online for two hours and it was well worth it.

The topic was warm ups and cool downs. I have my Personal Trainer license from ACE, but I still haven’t obtained my Group Certification class from AFAA (I am working on it). Tanya provided us with much needed knowledge and ideas for my classes. I don’t want to spill the candy in the lobby, so I won’t tell you her secrets BUT I will tell you that I used all her tips in class and it makes a big difference.

There is something about Tanya Beardsley that is “magical.” She embodies the Zumba spirit like no one else and adds her own flavor. The most impressive thing about her is how easy she can make a group of people feel comfortable with her so quickly. Her personality shines.

She also has amazing memory. In class, she referenced me by the Master Class I attended with her last month. THE ROOM WAS JAM PACKED WITH PEOPLE at that Master Class. How she even knew who little old me was, in a sea of Zumba-fanatics is amazing to me. She also referenced Z8fitness! Although I know we are a special group of instructors and of course, I am quite memorable, I really think Tanya is that way with EVERYONE. And just her way of being with me and with everyone else in the room, gave me some reassurance, that my “little obsession” with Zumba is awesome and that acknowledging, remembering little things about my students, and talking to them before and after class is the world to them as Tanya B. meant to me.

Second class was “Hip Hop: The Zumba Remix.” George Hu and Michael Thomas are awesome dancers and they put the cherry on top of my Zumba sundae (pun intended . . get it Zumba Sunday ;-) ).

I decided to take the workshop because Hip Hop is not my favorite dance to do in Zumba. I love the music, but I’m just not very good at dancing to it. Yeah, I can bust it out at a party but for some reason, it takes me a little longer to get it together for class. Luckily, they broke down some easy steps that look HOT. Yes, I’m going to have to practice, practice, practice but I think I have some great choreography that I can bring to class to switch out the Latin music and spice things up a little more.

And that’s it. New friends to add on Facebook, tons of pictures and videos to share, so much information and memories to last a lifetime.

Zumba Corporate put on an amazing Convention this year for us instructors and I am definitely going back next year.

Countdown to Cancun

If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook, you know I earned a trip to Cancun!!!

The cool thing about being a Beachbody coach is that not only do I get to help people on their fitness journey (and I feel very rewarded by that), I get the opportunity to earn really cool trips. The expenses go on the company's tab and they send me and my family or friends on beautiful vacations. I earned this trip awhile ago but I received the notice recently! I am staying at the Moon Palace Resort in Cancun, Mexico. I have been to Mexico before but never Cancun. I am pretty pumped about this trip. I can't wait to lay on the sand and swim in the water! I love the ocean so much!

It's crazy, I already know that next year, I am off on a cruise with the Beachbody team.

Well, as you know Beachbody is all about fitness and feeling your best! On the agenda, there are live workouts with the trainers, Shaun T, Tony Horton and Autumn Calabrese, parties, and lots of time to relax! I am pumped. Iceland was gorgeous but Cancun will be so HOT!

In honor of that trip, I have created these short 15 second clips on ab exercises to get your bod BIKINI READY. Of course, food and fitness go hand in hand. I am eating super clean for the next 15 days and will workout but I thought it was a cool treat for people who hate crunches as much as I do. All the moves are focused on the core without getting you down and doing the typical crunch. They are complex and somewhat difficult but they are focused on stabilizing your core while shredding it!

Governor's Island

If you follow me on Facebook or Instagram, you know I can't stop talking about Governor's Island. It's such a beautiful place to visit in New York City and there is so much to do. On the weekdays, you can access free one hour bike rentals from 10am to 12pm courtesy of Blazing Saddles. Everyone walks in that direction when they walk off the ferry but in case you are the only one who wants to ride, make a left and continue walking. You will see them. The ferry is $2 round trip and there is barely anyone around.

One the weekends, the ferry is free and there is always an event happening.  So expect more people.

My favorite part of the island are the views! You can see the Statue of Liberty, lower Manhattan and the Freedom Tower. It's absolutely stunning. There is no other place in the city with such a panorama view. You can get active or lounge around on a hammock on Hammock Grove. Regardless, its going to be a great time. I recommend you bring food if you go during the week. We saw one food vendor and they only accepted cash. His food did look great and clean but bring your own stuff, save money, and have a picnic. Just make sure to pick up after yourself because the park is pristine and it really should stay that way - especially because its surrounded by water.

Bear Mountain Hiking Trip

On Sunday, a bunch of friends ( from Zumba Fitness and Beachbody challengers) and I went on a group hiking trip to Bear Mountain. We did what I believe was the Perkins Memorial Tower Loop. It was a hard work but such a rewarding view at the top. I loved it and highly recommend everyone to enjoy the local hikes that the Hudson Valley has to offer. We are so lucky to have such beauty right in our backyards. Well, I drink coffee before my workout when I am really sleepy or lethargic. We are busy people and sometimes we are lazy people. Coffee is my friend. Jillian Michaels says its fine. She has no problem with it and even got in trouble on Biggest Loser this season because she gave her contestants coffee pills. So go for it… unless it gives you the runs because the runs and a workout no good. Just remember you will have to drink more water so get that gallon ready. Also, you can buy E&E right here.

Brazilian Butt

This is the most popular search term that gets people to my site since I wrote this blog. I didn't like Brazilian Butt Lift but if you still want it, buy it off my Beachbody site. However, I suggest you take on a squat and lunge challenge to get that booty lifted. Being honest!

What to do after the 30 day shred? Ripped in 30 or Extreme Shred.

What a great question. I absolutely LOVE Ripped in 30. Just look at the abs I got thanks to good ole Jillian Michaels.

abs_funfitchic It is one of my favorite workouts on DVD and I didn't enjoy Extreme Shred. So I say do Ripped in 30. Just my opinion. Good luck.

Is Cardio Axe High or Low impact

If you are dancing with me, it's HIGH impact. I love shaking my booty and moving all around the floor, however …you can keep it low impact by eliminating the bounce. Hope this helps. Thanks for asking.

Dicks Sporting Goods Store Clothes

I love Dicks Sporting Goods and used to swear on it until I found the fitness rack at TJ Maxx. Cheaper, great brands and awesome stuff. I say go to Dicks and if what you want isn't on sale, go to TJ Maxx or Marshalls or Target. Not worth spending the money. Especially since TJ Maxx carries Nike, Reebok, Adidas and other brands. It may be a little harder to find Under Armour on sale or at one of these stores. If you know of a good place to buy cheap Under Armour clothing, let me know!
